    15 reasons why Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh is a city worth exploring

    Shivpuri, also called Sipri, is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh and named after Lord Shiva. It has a great historical significance as Mughal and Hindu Emperors conquered it for a long period. Shivpuri is also popular among ornithologists as it has the Karera Bird Sanctuary, the residence of the Great Indian Bustard. Bird lovers gather here to watch the diverse species of birds. With its inclined hills, dense forests, and minimal population, Shivapuri makes for a peaceful getaway for a vacation.

    Shivpuri is a city of rich heritage and exotic cultural places of attraction. Following are some notable locations to visit, which makes visiting Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh worth it.

    1. Shiv Chaturdashi 

    Visiting Shivpuri is worth it because of the Shiv Chaturdashi festival celebrated in February and March. The exuberance of saints from all over the country at Amarkantak is worth seeing. It's delightful and spiritual to visit Shivpuri for the festival.

    2. Madhav National Park

    It is part of the upper Vindhyan hills with diverse ecosystems. It comprises of lakes, forests and grasslands, and is home to leopards, wild pigs, porcupines, wolves, deer, jackals, wild dogs, pythons and foxes.

    3. Chhatri

    These are graceful and famous attractions of Shivpuri made with intricately embellished marble. The chhatris are architectural marvels with the fusion of Hindu and Islamic styles. They consist of Mughal pavilions.

    4. Madhav Vilas Palace

    It is a splendid work of terraces, marble floors, and beautiful turrets. The exterior palace has a hint of a rose colour and colonial architecture. Because of the preservation of Madhav National Park, the view from turrets and terraces is the same as in the earlier era. This magnificent, glorious place is worth visiting during a visit to Shivpuri.

    5. Narwar Fort

    Narwar Fort, situated atop a hill on the Vindhya Range, is said to have been built by Kachwaha Rajputs. The fort and palaces have the Rajput style of architecture.

    6. Shivpuri district museum

    The district museum is a collection of old historical and cultural artefacts. It also consists of old Rajput and Maratha paintings, coins, sculptures, and antiques.

    7. Tatya Tope Memorial

    Ramachandra Pandurang Tope, popularly known as Tatya Tope, was a brave freedom fighter and Maratha leader. He sacrificed his life in the 1857 uprising during the battle for independence. Tatya Tope's role was vital in capturing Gwalior.

    8. Banganga Temple

    Banganga is an old architectural temple at Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh. People worship Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva at the temple. It is well-known for its 52 holy kunds. According to legends, Arjuna in the epic, Mahabharata, shot an arrow to the ground to get water to quench Bhishma’s thirst. Hence the name, Banganga as 'ban' means arrow and 'Ganga' is the River Ganges.

    9. Karera Sanctuary 

    Karera is a wildlife sanctuary established to protect the Great Indian Bustard in the region. The Karera Wildlife Sanctuary has deciduous forests, acacia, riverine, and swamp vegetation. It has two crucial species - the Bustard and Blackbuck. The sanctuary also has migratory birds coming to Dihaliya Lake. 

    10. Survaya ki Garhi

    Ancient temples adorn the city of Shivpuri. All monuments of Shivpuri have historical and ancient vestige to them and represent India's past. Survaya ki Garhi is a small town situated 20 km from Shivpuri. A popular temple of Lord Shiva in Survaya ki Garhi is a must-visit for its exquisite architecture. The Garhi auditorium is made entirely from stone. Music and dance mantras waver in the arena. Survaya ki Garhi also has a lake situated in the town, which adds to the attraction.

    11. BhadaiyaKund

    BhadaiyaKund in Shivpuri is India's natural spring. It is an ideal place to visit in central India. People believe that the spring water of the BhadaiyaKund has therapeutic powers. Water fills the Kund during the monsoon season, making it the best time to visit.

    12. Sakhya Sagar lake and Madhav Sagar Lake

    These are two lakes situated near the Madhav National Park. They play a critical role in sustaining the biodiversity of Madhav National Park. Both Sakhya Sagar Lake and Madhav Sagar Lake are home to wild animals, birds, and reptiles. Sakhya Sagar Lake is worth visiting as it consists of the Sailing Club, which offers boat rides for tourists. It is one of the best places to visit for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. The lake offers breathtaking views with lush green forests and sunsets. The Sakhya Sagar Lake and Madhav Sagar Lake were created in 1918 from the River Manier.

    13. Pawa waterfall

    In addition to the beauty of the falls, a glorious statue of Lord Shiva nearby attracts nature lovers. Monsoon is the best season to visit Pawa waterfalls, which originate from the River Pawa. Skilled divers can scuba dive and snorkel at PawaKund, making it a good vacation point. It is a perfect place for a blend of nature and inner peace.

    14. BhooraKhon waterfall

    BhooraKhon is an exotic waterfall near Madhav Sagar Lake. It is an ideal location for adventurous tourists where you can enjoy swimming and boating. There is also a park and a recreational centre at BhooraKhon waterfalls.

    15. Sultan Garh waterfall

    Sultan Garh's waterfalls lie amid lush green hills. One of the most peaceful places in Shivpuri, monsoon is the best season to visit. The beauty of the place attracts photographers and nature lovers.

You can get cabs to the main city of Gwalior and get on a bus or train to Shivpuri. Alternatively, you can also hire a cab directly from the airport to Shivpuri.
