    Jalandhar is among the few unique cities that blend the ancient, mediaeval, and modern. Located in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, Jalandhar draws your attention for more than one reason. First, its historical legacy which bears a close relation with the Harappan age. Second, the city has witnessed many upheavals during its long journey, braving the Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, and the British.

    Jalandhar landmarks you cannot miss

    You cannot have enough of this city that is located between two rivers, Satluj and Beas. Replete with monuments and shrines will leave you yearning for more.     1. Devi Talab Mandir Temple

    The temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where thousands of devotees come to worship Sati in the form of Devi Durga. Central to the temple complex is a 200-year-old tank, where many come to take a holy dip. The tank’s backdrop is the serene yet majestic temple that has survived many invasions in the past. 

    2. Jang-e-Azadi Memorial

    The memorial reminds the present generation of Punjab’s historical contribution to the struggle through the ages, especially the freedom struggle. In addition, the memorial showcases the rich cultural heritage of the land and is a recently-added attraction. 

    • Time: You can visit the memorial from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m 

    3. Gurudwara Talhan Sahib Ji

    A significant attraction in Jalandhar is the annual fair remembering Shaheed Baba Nihal Singh, while the majestic and imposing white-marbled Gurudwara stands guard. Its serenity and calmness touch your soul to leave a lasting impression of peace.

    4. Shaheed-e-Azam Museum

    Punjab has been at the forefront of India’s freedom movement, undergoing many tribulations. Furthermore, the monument is a historical depiction of Punjabi’s fight for independence. In addition, you will find the museum a treasure trove of history and culture.

    • Time: Tour the museum between 10 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. 

    5. Shiva Mandir

    The architectural marvel showcases the gate in a different style, while the complex is matching the prevalent times. Today, the temple built in reverence to Lord Shiva, is one of Jalandhar’s significant attractions and one of the most respected places in the city.

    • Time: Visit the shrine between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

    6. Tulsi Mandir

    The ancient temple is dedicated to Vrinda, wife of the demon king Jalandhara. The adjacent tank is believed to be the king’s bathing place in olden times. The shrine is located in Kol Krisjhan Chand and is surrounded by many other temples in the vicinity. The Annapurna, Shiva, and Hanuman temples are nearby to visit. 

    • Time: Visit the temple between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

    7. Kartarpur Gurudwara

    The fifth Sikh Guru Arjan Dev established the Gurudwara in A.D. 1656, about 16 km from the city centre. The Gurudwara is popular for the fair that is held here to mark the birth anniversary of the Guru. 

    • Time: Visit between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.

    8. Jama Masjid Dargah Imam Nasir

    It is believed that Sufi Saint Baba Farid visited and stayed in the beautifully crafted 800-year-old tomb. Its Mughal architecture, with exquisite mural designs and line drawings on its walls are stunning. The beauty comes to life during prominent festivals when it is illuminated. 

    9. Pushpa Gujral Science City

    The project is a joint venture between the Indian and Punjab governments, a testimony to the ever-evolving city. This modern structure, spread over 72 acres, covers every facet of human development to the latest scientific achievements. You can also indulge in a leisurely boat ride at the facility.

    • Time: Visit between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

    Jalandhar’s street food

    The mention of food in Punjab conjures visions of lip-smacking, ghee-drenched potato parathas, and sarson da saag and makki di roti. Gourmet enthusiasts will find Jalandhar’s street food a major reason to visit Jalandhar.Here are some dishes you must try when here.

    How to reach?

    • By road: The city supports one of the largest networks of bus services connecting all the nearby cities. You will spoilt for choice for services rendered by state and private buses. 
    • By rail: Jalandhar Railway Station lies on the Delhi-Amritsar link connecting the city to all corners. Several express trains ply on the route for easy travel options.
    • By air: The nearest air hub to Jalandhar is in Amritsar, 75 km away, connecting every domestic destination, besides a few international destinations. The Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport is served by many airlines like IndiGo, which is instrumental in putting Jalandhar on the air map through Amritsar. However, the airbase at Adampur, adjacent to the city, permits limited air services.

    Climate/Best time to visit

    Winters are short and cool, and the summers are long and hot. The monsoon season is from July till August. Despite the temperature fluctuating between summers and winters, visitors will find the months from October to March to be the most conducive for a visit to Jalandhar.
