The name Jabalpur is the combination of an Arabic word 'Jabal' meaning rock, and the Sanskrit word 'Pur' meaning city. During the Gond dynasty rule, it known to be Garha-Katanga or Vansh's Palace Garha-Mandla. Later the name of the city was changed to Jubbulgarh, and further, to Jubbulpore in British rule.
