The name Jabalpur is the combination of an Arabic word ‘Jabal’ meaning rock and Sanskrit word ‘Pur’ meaning city. And the name stands true for the city as it is home to some unique natural wonders such as Marble rocks, Balancing rocks, Dhuandhar fall to name just a few. Resting on the shore of River Narmada and tributary plains of Gour, Sone, Hiran and Ken rivers, Jabalpur was capital of the Gond Kings during the 12th century. During the Gond dynasty rule, it known to be Garha-Katanga or Vansh's Palace Garha-Mandla. Later the name of the city was changed to Jubbulgarh, and further, to Jubbulpore in British rule. Today, Jabalpur is an important industrial and business centre of Madhya Pradesh and is undoubtedly going to amaze you with its various aspects.

Best time to visit: September to March is the ideal time to explore Jabalpur.

How to reach

By Air: Dumna Airport or Jabalpur Airport is the nearest airport to the city, located 25km east of Jabalpur. IndiGo now provides direct connectivity between Jabalpur and Hyderabad along with seamless connectivity to other locations.

By Train: Jabal Junction is the prime railway station that serves the city, connecting it to the rest of the country through various regular trains.

By Bus: Jabalpur is well-connected to all major cities through a good network of bus services. National Highways like Jabalpur-Jaipur Road NH12 and Varanasi-Kanyakumari Road NH7 passes through the town.

Getting around: Taxis and private cabs are the common transportation mode in the city. Auto-rickshaws and online taxis like Savaari and Ola are other modes to travel across the city.

Marble items from Bhedaghat: Your shopping list for Jabalpur should start with buying some marble artefacts from Bhedaghat as you are in the city of marble rocks. Check out beautiful marble lampshades in different sizes and shapes, marble accessories or idol of gods. You will notice numerous marble shiv lingas, but you should go for oval shiv lingas in black stone from Narmada river that are available only on one or two shops. Though these are a bit expensive from the regular ones. One of the must buys are the customised marble nameplates for as cheap as Rs 100. You can also buy some stones embellished and brass based bangles.

Markets in Jabalpur: The city has a number of markets located in various chowks and galis. Out of all Kotwali Bazaar is the oldest one. Ganjipur is another old market where you can shop for fashionable pieces of jewellery, handbags and dresses. Head out to Sadaar Bazaar to buy some branded stuff. Another famous shopping market is Kamaniya Gate that offers a varied range of clothing and jewellery.
