• Bhedaghat: Your first sightseeing in Jabalpur must be Bhedaghat. Located about 25 km from Jabalpur, Bhedaghat is a small village offering the best natural scenic beauty. The place is hugely popular for the Marble Rocks, the famous Dhuandhar waterfall and Chousat Yogini temple, all within 3 km. So, you can visit these three sites on a single trip.
• Marble rocks: Take a boat ride on the river and see how beautifully the river has naturally carved and created an 8km long beautiful gorge of the soft marbles or commonly known as Marble rocks. Locally the gorge is known as Bandar Kudni (monkey's jumping place) as earlier it was so narrow that only monkeys could cross it. The marble found here is carved into various items that you can buy from nearby local shops.
• Dhuandhar Falls: The point where the Narmada river water takes a plunge and creates water fog forms the Dhuandhar Falls. The term Dhuandhar is a combination of two Hindi words – Dhuan, meaning smoke and Dhar, meaning flow. The best time to visit is at Sharad Purnima during Narmada Mahotsav, as the white marble rocks appear silver and look stunning in the moonlight. You can reach the waterfall from the east and west bank of the Narmada river. If you want to see the other side of the waterfall, you will have to take a cable car service from Bhedaghat.
• Chousat Yogini temple: As the name suggests, the temple comprises 64 intricately carved yogini statues that date back to the 10th and 11th century during the reign of Kalchuri rulers. The temple is the largest one among the other series of Yogini temples in India. To see the beautiful temple complex, be prepared to climb about 150 steps or even more as it is at the top of a rocky hill. After entering, you will notice 95 shrines that include 64 yogini sculptures in a circular pattern around the temple and the main shrine of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati riding on Nandi the holy bull (a sight like never before). Although the temple is partly damaged, its remains details the story of ancient civilisations that ruled Jabalpur.
• Madan Mahal fort: Touching the skyline and offering a beautiful panoramic view of the Jabalpur city is the Madan Mahal Fort that is still standing on the hilltop (about 500 meters above the ground level), as the testimony of the Gond rulers. Built-in 11th century AD under the rule of Raja Madan Singh, the fort was primarily a military post being used as an army barrack and watchtower to keep an eye on the nearby regions. There are secret passages, corridors, stables, war rooms and leisure chambers for the royal family at the fort, which shows that the fort was indeed a military base for army men and their horses. The main fort was known as Garha Fort, where the royal family used to stay in the plains.
• Balancing rock: Right at the base of the Madan Mahal Fort near Shailparna, you will see the Balancing rock. A natural wonder in itself, you will be amazed to see how one stone balances itself on the base of the lower rock within a space measuring just about 6 square inches. These eroded volcanic rock formations strong enough to survive any natural disaster. They have even survived an earthquake of 6.5 magnitudes.
• Rani Durgavati Museum: It is among the famous tourist spots in Jabalpur where people flock in to witness the ancient collection of inscriptions, coins, prehistoric relics and sculptures. The most attractive ones include a red sandstone statue of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati playing the game of Chausar and another Goddess Durga statue from a place called Doni. The museum was built in 1976 in the memory of Queen Durgavati, a symbol of self-sacrifice and martyrdom in Jabalpur.
• Pisanhari Ki Madiya: Another popular place to visit in the city is Pisanhari Ki Madiya, a Digambar Jain Pilgrimage centre. Legend says that the temple was built by a poor woman about 500 years ago. The complex of the temple is situated on the top of a hill and comprises many shrines of different Tirthankar saints. The peaceful ambience of the temple will instantly take you to the world of meditation. While visiting the temple, you can also plan to go to other nearby locations such as Bagha Talaab, Supa Tal lake and Shali Parn Udyan.
• Dumna Nature Reserve: Spread over 1058 hectare of land, this ecotourism site gives you an opportunity to spend a lovely time with nature. Walk around the reserve while enjoying the sights of several wild animals like chitals, jackals, spotted dears, monkey, porcupine, many different species of birds among many more. You can also go for boating at the Khandari Dam which is near to the reserve.
