10 top places to go on a shopping spree in Kuala Lumpur

What could be better than going on a shopping spree to get some wonderful things, while also learning about a country's culture and cuisine? Kuala Lumpur is a shopaholic's dream, from the massive malls that flank Berjaya Times Square to the backstreet kiosks of Petaling Street. Local markets in Kuala Lumpur such as Taman Connaught Night Market and Central Market are fantastic places to find artistic gems and low-cost replicas.

Below are the places to go to get a proper sense of the city's unique retail culture.

    1. Petaling Street

This bustling Chinatown shopping district is a terrific place to soak up the local vibes while browsing boutiques selling low-cost shoes, accessories, and clothes. In addition to its delectable food, this place is popular for selling affordable replicas of famous brands. Overall, cheap shopping in Kuala Lumpur is an exciting experience. What’s better, the street is open 24 hours.

    2. Central Market

The famed Kuala Lumpur Central Market began in 1888 and has since turned into a sophisticated art deco shopping centre. If you are in Kuala Lumpur, then this Central Market is a must-see to learn about Malaysian tradition and culture. You can find high-quality items that can be purchased at low cost. Malay stalls can be found on Lorong Melayu, Chinese vendors on Straits Chinese, and Indian stalls on Lorong India. On the art lane, you will find great artwork at a reduced price, which is also a terrific indulgence when on a shopping tour in Kuala Lumpur. You can visit the Central Market between 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day.

    3. Berjaya Times Square

With over 2.5 million visitors every month, come to Berjaya Times Square which is a prominent mall in Kuala Lumpur known for its low-cost shopping. With approximately 1,000 businesses selling low-cost clothing and accessories, this market is a must-visit. While there are several mid-range foreign brands here, the native Malaysian brands such as Padini, Seed, Vincci, and Soda are true crowd pleasers. The market is open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

     4. Kasturi Walk

This open-air 24-hour market is a great place to go if you're looking for some street-side inexpensive shopping in Kuala Lumpur. It is situated next to Central Market and because of this the product selection isn't as extensive. However, it's a great spot to pick up some souvenirs and sample tropical fruits on the way. And, the place catches the eye for being spotless and well-kept.

    5. Taman Connaught Night Market

Taman Connaught Night Market, also known as Cheras Pasar Malam, is a weekly night market held on Wednesday nights in the Cheras neighbourhood of Kuala Lumpur. It is your one-stop shop for everything and anything, and it also has the distinction of being Malaysia's longest night market. Make sure to haggle a little to obtain the best rates here.

    6. Reject Shop

Reject Shop is one of the well-known stores in Kuala Lumpur for offering off-season clothing as well as discontinued lines from popular designer retailers in the United States, Europe, and Australia. If you have a preference for branded items and the patience to look for them, then you will find fabulous apparel here. The Reject Shop has outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia.

    7. Factory Outlet Store

When you come to Kuala Lumpur for shopping, another fantastic store to visit is Factory Outlet Store, better known as FOS. The garments and other products sold here are mainly sourced from factories, so customers get authentic merchandise at meagre prices. You can shop brands like Tommy Hilfiger, G.A.P., and Ralph Lauren.

    8. Sungei Wang Plaza

Sungei Wang Plaza, also known as the River of Gold, is one of Kuala Lumpur's longest-running malls. This place contains everything that one may desire to buy at lower pricing than its competitors. The lowest floor is filled with stores and art studios, while the middle levels are filled with outlets offering a range of inexpensive items such as jewellery and apparel. Bargaining is standard practice here, so don't be afraid to haggle for a reasonable deal. The mall opens at 10:00 a.m. and closes by 10:00 p.m., every day.

    9. Low Yat Plaza

If you enjoy shopping for gadgets and electronic items, then Low Yat Plaza is one of Kuala Lumpur's oldest retail malls specialising in electronics. However, one must beware of businesses selling fake gadgets here. It is preferable to stick to legitimate stores that provide more alternatives and some assurance. The locals visit smaller businesses on upper levels as they offer better deals, so check them out before making a purchase. The best time to visit is from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

    10. The Malaysian year end sale

The Malaysian year end sale is not a market but an event that happens from October to the new year. It is the best time to visit Kuala Lumpur if you want to buy a variety of things at a low cost. During this sale season, you will find various stores across the country offering incredible discounts on clothing, accessories, and electronics. Some of the popular places to visit during the event are Intermark Mall, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity Mall, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Berjaya Times Square, and Midvalley Mega Mall.

    Shopping Tips

    • Parking can be difficult when visiting these locations, especially during the holiday season, so try to take public transportation.
    • Because the booths are so near to one another and are frequented by so many people, the markets may get extremely hot and humid. It is best to dress in comfortable clothing, stay hydrated, and take care of your belongings.
    • Though you will find many products at extremely low costs, make sure to properly inspect each item for any flaws before making a purchase. Take extra caution with electronic devices and gadgets.
    • When it comes to inexpensive shopping in Kuala Lumpur, there is something for everyone - from artistic clothes to artwork and great souvenirs; all you need to do is take a day out and explore the city's markets.

    Places to visit

    • Petronas Tower: This 88-storey tower, which gleams like twin silver pillars, is 452 metres tall and is an important landmark in Kuala Lumpur. A 58-metre-long sky bridge connects the 41st and 42nd floors of both the buildings. You may see the site by taking a 45-minute tour and reserving tickets in advance.
    • Kuala Lumpur Tower: The Kuala Lumpur Tower, popularly known as Menara KL, is another significant landmark in the city. It is one of the world's highest freestanding skyscrapers, reaching 421 metres. From its viewing deck, which is nearly 100 metres higher than Petronas Towers, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city. The tower also has an open deck, a revolving restaurant called Atmosphere 360, an amphitheatre, gift stores, and lovely pools. The restaurant is located on the top level of the Tower, which may be reached through a staircase or an elevator.
    • Kampung Baru: It is the only remaining traditional Malay village, set against the backdrop of Kuala Lumpur's contemporary skyscrapers. The British created the property in the 1890s and it is roughly 110 years old. It is mostly occupied by Malay people and provides a picture of traditional Malay life.
    • Batu Caves: To believe in the wonders of nature, you must visit Batu Caves. It is a 400 million-year-old hill with cave temples and a network of limestone caves. There are three primary caverns dedicated to Lord Murugan. The Cathedral or Temple Cave is the largest, while the other two are the art gallery cave and museum cave. When here, climb the 272 steep stairs to appreciate the splendour of the area.

    How to reach?

    • By air: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is around 50 km from the city centre in Sepand. IndiGo flight route now connects Kuala Lumpur to Delhi and Bengaluru, as well as other Indian destinations.

    Getting around

Kuala Lumpur has a well-developed network of buses, taxis, and commuter trains that link the city and its suburbs. You may also use the metro system in Kuala Lumpur, which comprises monorail and fast transit trains.

Now you know about the shopping destinations in Kuala Lumpur, why wait? Browse for a suitable Kuala Lumpur package and get ready to enjoy a shopping spree.

    Best time to visit

Because Kuala Lumpur lies so close to the equator, the weather is hot and rainy throughout the year. Nevertheless, May to July is the best time to visit because the area is mostly dry during these months and the skies are bluer than ever. The months of December to February, and May to August are drier than the rest of the year. This is peak tourist season so hotels and flights are more expensive.
