About Gwalior

Gwalior is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is well-known for its palaces and temples, particularly the intricately carved Hindu temple ‘Saas Bahu Ka Mandir’. Gwalior Fort is situated on a sandstone plateau above the city and is accessible by a winding path surrounded by sacred Jain monuments. Within the fort's high walls lies the 15th-century Gujari Mahal Palace, now an archaeological museum.

Places to visit in Gwalior

  • Gwalior Fort: Babur, the Mughal emperor, called the Gwalior Fort "the pearl among fortresses in India," one of the most formidable defences in all of northern and southern India. The entire city is dominated by this enormous structure, which is perched on a huge rocky mountain not far from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, central India. It has been a part of the city's identity and architecture since the sixth century, according to the evidence. The second-oldest known reference to the number "zero" was found there, as a carving within a temple on the fort's summit.
  • Man Mandir Palace: Man Mandir Palace, which is located at the northeastern extremity of the fort, was built between 1486 and 1516 by Man Singh Tomar, the Tomar ruler. Even though the palace was destroyed because it couldn't withstand time, the remaining pieces still showcase the amazing carvings and decorations from that historical era. The two open courts of the palace are separated by two-storey apartments. There are other prison cells that were built underground by the Mughals afterwards. Here, Aurangzeb put his brother Murad in prison and slowly poisoned him with opium till he passed away. By finding a local tour, you can discover a lot of interesting information about the region and see parts of the palace that you wouldn't otherwise be able to see.
  • Tomb of Tansen: Tansen was a renowned vocalist in Akbar's courts throughout the Middle Ages and one of India's greatest musicians. He was also one of the "nine pearls" of the Mughal court. Tansen was said to be able to make magic, conjure rain, and even enchant animals with his music. The master who was his teacher, Mohammad Ghaus, taught him Hindustani classical music. He fostered the Dhrupad fashion and established the Gwalior Gharana musical genre. His final resting place is a wonderful example of architecture, and it is conveniently located next to his mentor. The Tansen Music Festival is held here each November, drawing well-known musicians from all over the country to perform in a range of classical concerts.
  • Scindia Museum: Jivaji Rao Scindia is the subject of one of Madhya Pradesh's most well-known museums. It began in 1964 and now takes up about 35 rooms at Jai Villas Palace. The museum is renowned for its collection of artefacts, including paintings, sculptures, literature, and coins. The museum is a great place to study Gwalior's past, especially the Scindia dynasty.
  • Gwalior Zoo: The zoo is simply one more award for the thriving, historically significant city of Gwalior. The Gwalior Zoo, which Madhao Rao Scindia of the royal dynasty constructed in 1922, is a component of the larger garden known as Phool Bagh and is home to various rare species of animals. Here, wild animals including spotted deer, black bucks, sambhars, white tigers, golden peacocks, and hyenas may be seen. Numerous smaller populations of crocodiles, snakes, monkeys, and birds also reside in the zoo. Due to the existence of rare species of wild animals there, the 8 hectares of land that make up the zoo have been recognised as a protected site and are looked after by the Municipal Corporation of Gwalior as part of its legacy.
