The airport started operating flights in 1973. The former name of the airport, Seeb International was changed only in 2008. Originally, the Muscat International Airport had just a single runway, but now to manage the tourist traffic, the airport has 2 runways. The Muscat International Airport also underwent a renovation project in the year 2017. 

After the revamping, the airport is now equipped with an additional terminal, control tower, VIP terminal, baggage reclaim centres and a few more. The airport also has a premium-class lounges for passengers to avail the benefits of top-notch facilities.
