The East India government in the Bengal region launched a movement to conquer Chatham island of Andaman and Nicobar back in the 18th century. After successfully colonising it, they named it Port Blair in the memory of Archibald Blair.
After the suppression of the Great Revolt of 1857, hundreds of freedom fighters were executed and the remaining were incarcerated at Port Blair. Thus, the Cellular Jail or Kaala Pani was built to exile such political prisoners for life. Today, it stands as a monument to the great freedom struggle and is a popular tourist site.
