What is Mangaluru best known for?
Mangaluru (also known as Mangalore) functions as the major port city for the state of Karnataka in India and has a population of nearly half a million within the city itself. Ever since ancient times, the city has been an important port city for international trade and till today it plays the leading role in India’s cashew and coffee exports. - Bejai Museum- Founded in 1960, this museum is located within the city, it houses archaeological and geological artefacts. The majority of this collection was assembled privately by Col. V. R. Mirajkar. It was later donated after his death for the public to visit.
- Pilikula Botanical Garden- The perfect all-day trip, this garden is spread out over 350 acres and features a zoo, golf course, a lake and even a heritage village. This multipurpose tourist attraction has a science centre and can be reached by road from Mangaluru city centre.
- Sultan Battery- Situated on the Gurupura river, this old watchtower was constructed by Tipu Sultan in the late 1700s as a defence against invading ships. While the monument is in disrepair, the solid construction, history and spectacular views from the top are well worth a visit.
- Milagres Church- This is one of the oldest churches in the city, being built in 1680 by Bishop Thomas de Crasto, with a white marble exterior exuding an impressive old-world charm.
- Tannirbhavi Beach- As a coastal city, Mangaluru has the perk of the wonderful Tannirbhavi Beach with easy access. Enjoy food and sunsets after spending your day frolicking in the water and spending some relaxing time at the Tannirbhavi Tree park.
