What is Gorakhpur known for?
Gorakhpur is a very old city in India. It is named after saint Gorakhpur. The city has a long history that can be stretched back to India’s ancient past. It was part of the ancient Koshal Kingdom of the 6th century BC. The city retained its importance in the medieval period too as the principal centre of the Nath Hindu movement, a philosophy that combined Shaivite, Buddhist and Yogic traditions of India. Many centuries later the city again became the talk of the country. It made national news due to the Chauri Chaura event of the non-cooperation movement in 1922.
