Ranchi is the capital city of the state of Jharkhand. The city was the centre of the Jharkhand movement, a movement that asked for a separate state for the tribal regions in Bihar, West Bengal and Orissa. According to mythology, the name Ranchi comes from a bird, called Rici. In ancient times, the city was controlled by the Magadhan rulers. In 1869, during British rule, Ranchi was made into a municipality.
