Vadodara – The city of art
Originally known as Baroda, Vadodara also has a few locally adored names like the “Sanskari Nagari” and “Kala Nagari”. Historically, it was ruled mostly by the Rajputs and still lives up to its medieval name of Chandanavati that was kept to commemorate Raja Chandan of the Dodiya Rajput dynasty. Its name, Baroda was in fact derived from a contortion of the name, Brodera given by early British travellers. However, Vadodara’s most recent ties to Indian history began with its annexation from the Babi Nawabs by the Maratha general Pilaji Gaekwad post 1726.
