What is Tiruchirappalli best known for?
Located on the banks of the Kaveri river, Tiruchirappalli, the fourth largest city in the province was the first Cholas fort to fall into the Pallavas. But the Pallavas have never been able to maintain control of this strategic city and have lost the Pandyas several times. This tug of war finally came to an end when the Cholas re-established themselves in the 10th century. Trichy continued to be in them until the fall of the empire after which it became the fortress of Vijayanagara. When the empire collapsed in 1565, Trichy was also taken over by the Nayaks of Madurai, the Maratha, the Nawabs of Carnatic, the French and finally the British. But it was under the Nayaks of Madurai that Trichon flourished and prospered on its own and grew into what it is today. Trichy developed and prospered on its own, built near Rock Fort. Outside the castle several temples are dating to the 1760s. It was one of the main centres of the Carnatic Wars of the 18th century during the British and French empires of India. With its excellent infrastructure, Trichy will serve as a great visual base in central Tamilnadu.
