Best places to visit in Itanagar
- Wander through the historic Fort Itanagar: This fort is one of the most famous historical sites and a must-see when you are in Itanagar. The fort was built between the 14th and 15th centuries, making it one of the oldest structures in the state. Although now in crumbling ruins, the distinctive features of this fortress can still be seen. The entire fort was built entirely out of bricks. Thus, the name of the fort since “Ita” means “bricks” in the Ahom language.
- Visit Geker Sinying, a charming lake near Itanagar: A few kilometres away from Itanagar you can find a soothing lake called Geker Sinying or Ganga Lake. It is a popular local landmark among families for picnics. The entire area is surrounded by lush vegetation, and the mountains surrounding the lake provide a lovely backdrop for photography. This lake is also a great place to ride a pedal boat.
- Admire the beautiful Orchids at the Polo Park: Can’t get enough of the floral scents? Then a visit to the Polo Park may give you just that. There is a large botanical garden that houses a variety of flowers, and the most famous exhibit is the orchid collection. Polo Park also has a miniature zoo, ideal for kids to see different animals, there is also a souvenir shop from where visitors can purchase traditional handicrafts made by the locals.
- Seek for blessings at the Gompa: One of Itanagar's main attractions is the gompa, also called a Buddhist temple. It is an ideal attraction where you can find solitude and peace. Come here to sit and medicate, or just explore the temple away from the cacophony. Since it is located on a hilltop, you can get a lovely panoramic view of the city from the gompa.
- Go and see wildlife at Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary: The Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary covers a vast area surrounded by valleys and hills. With streams at various locations, it is a great place for nature lovers. The sanctuary is filled with various trees and animals. Here, you can spot wild animals such as antelopes, langurs, porcupines, and Himalayan black bears that inhabit the reserve.
- Go for a getaway to Rupa and enjoy the tranquillity: Rupa is a small hill station a few kilometres from Itanagar. It is a must visit destination in the state if you enjoy peace and quiet. This place is famous for beautiful grasslands and rolling mountains. Rupa is also an ideal place for forest bathing, which is a famous Japanese therapy to disconnect from every social media platform and connect with nature.
- Learn about the state’s history at the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum: History buffs should visit the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum. The museum opened to the public on 1 January, 1990.
