What is Kolhapur best known for?
A city built on the banks of the river Panchganga, Kolhapur is an ancient, holy city in the state of Maharashtra. It is less than 500 km from the financial capital of India – Mumbai. It is best known for Kolhapuri chappal – hand-crafted by traditional craftsmen using buffalo leather and tanned using vegetable dyes. Other handicrafts are equally famous in Kolhapur.

- Kopeshwar Temple – History buffs can enjoy a trip to this 12th century stone temple. Considered an architectural marvel due to the detailed carvings and stunning sculptures, this temple is a must-visit.
- Rankala Lake – Rankala lake is a serene, peaceful place to take a break. Surrounded by picturesque gardens on one side and the magnificent Shalini palace on the other, Rankala Lake also has other activities such as horse-riding and boating. - Shri Mahalaxmi Temple – Built in the 7th century, this is one of the holiest temples in Maharashtra and is one of the Shakti Peethas. The 3-feet tall beautiful black stone idol of the goddess is studded with precious gemstones.
- New Palace Museum – It has an impressive display of jewellery, attire, coins, weapons and paintings. Don’t forget to peek at the Darbar Hall with its carved columns, beautiful arches and a magnificent throne.
- Dream World Water Park – If you think Kolhapur is all history and nature, you are wrong. Adventure seekers and families can have fun in this waterpark with fun speed rides, rain dance, artificial wave pool, tube rides and Sky Magic Vortex park.
- Sagareshwar Deer Sanctuary – This is Maharashtra’s first man-made sanctuary. Sprawling across 11 square kms, this beautiful forest is home artificially introduced to wildlife species such as Sambar deer, Blackbucks, Muntjac deer, Chital, wild boars and peacocks and pythons.
- Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary – It is a natural World Heritage Site. Consisting of tropical evergreen forests, this sanctuary is also called as Bison sanctuary due to the population of the vulnerable Indian Bison. Five tributaries of Krishna river flows through this sanctuary and is a heaven for nature lovers.
