About Goa
The state of Goa is primarily known for its stunning beaches that are lined with swaying palm trees. But Goa is a lot more than that. Besides its more than 100 km coastline, Goa retains Portuguese history through its architecture and cuisine. So, once in Goa, take a scooter on rent, explore this state, from North to South, and understand why it is so popular among international tourists. Also, failing to try the vindaloo and fish curry will be a sore miss.
Places to visit in Goa
Choosing the top places to visit in Goa is quite tricky. Nevertheless, here is a list of the top five places that you cannot miss while visiting Goa:
- Dudhsagar Waterfalls: One of India's top tourist destinations is the Dudhsagar Waterfalls, located on the border between Goa and Karnataka. On the Mandovi River, there is a four-tiered waterfall structure that is among the tallest in India. White water plunges off a nearly sheer mountain face from a height of nearly 1017 feet. The best way to get there is by entering Mollem National Park and taking a van provided by the park to the falls because it is a part of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park. Although the general public is not permitted to access the Dudhsagar trek inside the park, you can still hike from Kulem and follow the jeep trail to the waterfalls. Although getting to the waterfalls won't be simple, the effort required will be well worth it.
- The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception: The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Goa. In 1541, a chapel was first constructed there, and the larger church building was then constructed over that chapel in 1619. The original structure has survived despite numerous modifications made since then. It has been a spiritual and geographic landmark for centuries and draws followers from all over the world. Old Portuguese sailors would offer their prayers at this church first after safely navigating the dangerous waters and arriving in Goa. This church is now a stunning white landmark in Panaji that features a beautiful multi-coloured interior that simultaneously exudes peace and joy.
- Chapora Fort: The Chapora Fort is a good location for sightseeing in Goa. The fort rises from the banks of River Chapora, giving it a commanding vantage point over its surroundings. This aspect of the fort is what sparked the previous conflicts over ownership of it. It is located at the end of a natural valley that flows into the ocean. The view from the fort is breathtaking, and the fort can be explored for a few hours while you take in the surrounding natural scenery. It's a pleasant place to sit and unwind, or you can even walk from the fort to the sea. Tourists are advised to bring their own food because there are no restaurants nearby.
- Bom Jesus Basilica: The Bom Jesus Basilica is one of the most significant tourist destinations in Goa. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well-known for housing St. Francis Xavier's mortal remains. St. Francis Xavier was a well-known Jesuit missionary and the co-founder of the Society of Jesus. The church was constructed in 1605, and the saint's body was brought there in 1622, where it has been lying in its glass mausoleum ever since. Visitors can see the body's silver casket, which is positioned on a raised platform. Every ten years, during the Exposition of the Saint's Relics, the coffin is typically brought down and displayed for the general public. The Basilica also includes a modern art gallery. The structure was built in the Baroque architectural style, and it is regarded as one of India's finest examples of the style.
- Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary: Even though Goa has a huge number of tourist attractions, the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary stands out from the rest. It is Goa's smallest wildlife sanctuary, but it is well-known among tourists and environmentalists. Some of India's rarest animal and plant species can be seen in the sanctuary. Many photographers from all over the country visit the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary in an effort to snap a beautiful picture of one of the animals or plants. The area of the sanctuary is just 8 square km, making it the most compact wildlife sanctuary, as one can tour the entire place in one day.
