Ranchi – The industrial centre of Jharkhand
Ranchi is the capital city of Jharkhand in eastern India. It is one of the largest cities in the state. Ranchi city has immense significance as it was the centre of the movement for Jharkhand when the state did not exist. The movement aimed to secure a separate state for the tribal regions of Orissa, West Bengal and Bihar.
The city’s historical records go back to ancient times. According to legends, the name Ranchi was derived from Rici – a bird. The Magadha empire had control over Ranchi in the olden times. Ranchi became a municipality in 1869. Owing to the city’s position in the Chota Nagpur plateau, it is a big draw for mining companies.
