Spread over a total area of 246.8 sq. km and housing a population of about 1.9 million, Coimbatore is the second-largest city in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is also known as the ‘Manchester of South India’ because of its large textile industries encouraged by the surrounding cotton fields.
Coimbatore got its name under British rule. It is situated on the banks of River Noyyal. It is one of the cities selected to be developed as the ‘smart city’ under the Smart Cities Mission.
