About Kolkata

Kolkata, some time ago Calcutta is the capital of West Bengal state and previous capital (1772–1911) of British India. It is perhaps the biggest city and one of its significant ports. The city is fixated on the east bank of the Hugli (Hooghly) River, when the main channel of the Ganges, around 154 km upstream from the leader of the Bay of Bengal; there the port city created as a point of transshipment from water to arrive and from waterway to ocean. A city of business, transport, and production, Kolkata is the prevailing urban focus of eastern India.

The city's previous name, Calcutta, is an anglicised adaptation of the Bengali name Kalikata. As indicated by a few, Kalikata is gotten from the Bengali word Kalikshetra, signifying "Ground of (the goddess) Kali."

Formed by the pioneer British in the way of a stupendous European capital-however, at this point set in one of the least fortunate and most overpopulated locales of India-Kolkata has developed into a city of sharp differences and inconsistencies. Kolkata has absorbed solid European impacts and beat the impediments of its pilgrim inheritance so as to locate its very own extraordinary personality. In the process, it made an amalgam of East and West that discovered its appearance in the life and works of the nineteenth century Bengali world-class and its most critical figure, the writer and spiritualist Rabindranath Tagore.
