About Amsterdam
Amsterdam is lovingly called "the city of canals" because of its many crescent-shaped waterways. The origin of these canals, called Grachtendgordel in Dutch, can be traced back to the 17th century. If you are one of those people who are fascinated by architecture, Amsterdam is a God-send for you! The city houses more than 1,500 heritage monuments. Additionally, the city's museum district is a top draw because the many museums here preserve Amaterdam's glorious history as one of the busiest port cities of medieval Europe, documents and artefacts dating back to its gild economy, and host numerous exhibitions that bear testimony to the city's rich heritage of painters. These are some of the places you can explore while in Amsterdam.
