What is Kuwait best known for?
Kuwait is a small country located in the Middle East in the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It is barren land with extremely hot summers and short, cool winters. The landscape varies considerably, between the desert plains and the plateau. Various ethnic groups live in the country, and only 40% of the population is in Kuwait. People from neighbouring Middle Eastern countries, such as Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, make up 35% of the population. For centuries, Kuwait has been a temporary home for Arab nomads.
Located between Mesopotamia and the Indus River basin, this arid region was a trade link between the two communities. Until the 18th century, Kuwait was a thriving community. It was in 1710 that the Sabah, a nomadic Arab people, settled in what is now the city of Kuwait. In the mid-18th century, members of the Utah family, originally from what is now Saudi Arabia, settled in Kuwait. In the space of fifty years, the city became an important commercial centre, with boat building and pearling and pearl farming being the two main industries.
