What is Coimbatore best known for?
Coimbatore, also known as Koyambatoor, Kovai or sometimes spelt as Covai, is the second-largest city in Tamil Nadu. Located on the banks of the Noyyal River and surrounded by the Western Ghats, major hub for manufacturing, education and healthcare in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore is among the fastest-growing tier-II cities in India.
Places to visit in Coimbatore
- Siruvani Waterfalls: Nestled on the western side of the Ghats with Nilgiris at the backdrop, Siruvani Waterfalls attracts tourists from all over. Access to the waterfall is only acquired from the Forest Department so ensure that you have all the required permits in place.
- Vaidehi Falls: Situated in the Narasipuram village is a beautiful Vaidehi Waterfall. Tucked away in the Nilgiris, this is a perfect serene retreat for travellers. Tourists come here for day tours and picnics with family or friends.
- Adiyogi Shiva: AdiyogiShiva is a 112 ft statue of Lord Shiva based in the foothills of the Velliangiri mountains.
- Dhyanalinga Temple: The Dhyanalinga is set amidst the foothills of the Velliangiri Mountains, the first to be completed in over 2000 yr. This meditative space does not subscribe to any particular faith or belief nor does it require any ritual, prayer, worship.
- Marudhamalai Temple: Marudhachalam Murthy (Lord Muruga) Temple, Marudamalai is a 12th century hill temple situated in Coimbatore. Built by Tamil kings, the temple is on top of a 600 ft (180 m) tall granite hill.
- Malampuzha Dam: Situated on the shores of River Malampuzha, this hamlet is located amidst lush green forests. The Dam has a park that is designed with recycled plastics, cans and bottles.
- Palakkad Fort: Built by Haider Ali, this fort is famously known to be Tipu Sultan’s fort. Established in the 18th century, it is now preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India.
