Places to visit in Bhubaneswar
- Lingaraja Temple : Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Lingaraja Temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples in the Indian state of Odisha. A prime tourist hotspot, this temple is an important landmark that distinguishes the city of Bhubaneswar. Culminating the medieval ages through its Kalinga architecture, the temple consists of a sanctum, a festival hall, an assembly hall and a hall of offerings. Shivaratri is celebrated with much pomp and vigour at the temple witnessing a massive footfall of pilgrims every year around this time.
- Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves : Commonly known as the Cuttack Caves, these caves have a partially natural occurrence with a partial artificial construction made at a later time. Having major historical and religious importance, these caves are situated on two adjacent hills; Udayagiri and Khandagiri, hence the name. Udayagiri has a total of 18 caves while Khandagiri has 15. Falling under the ‘must see” Indian Heritage list, these caves are a favourite tourist spot.
- Rajarani Temple : Dating back to the 11th century, this temple is known for its erotic carvings of women and couples lending it the name ‘love temple’. Built in the pancharatha style, the temple features two structures on a raised platform - a central shrine and a viewing hall. Constructed with dull red and yellow coloured sandstone that is locally called Rajarani, the temple is a must-visit for those interested in marvelling at distinct styles of architecture.
- Regional Museum of Natural History : A one-of-its-kind museum, this is a primary tourist hotspot in the Indian state of Odisha. With a massive amount of biodiversity on display sourced from as far as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Madagascar region and African forests, this museum promises a fascinating visit for all nature lovers.
- Parsurameswara Temple : Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this Hindu temple is one of the oldest temples to ever exist. Built in the Nagara style, the temple flaunts the distinct architectural style of Kalinga temples of the pre-10th century. It houses sculpted images of Shakta deities and also contains depictions of the Saptamatrikas, that are of major religious significance. The temple is a prime spot to visit by tourists and pilgrims all year round.
