Being the most popular state in the United States of America, Washington has a neoclassic charm to it. Home to numerous famous monuments and museums, the state is famous for its deeply rooted interest in fine arts, technology, and music. - National World War II Memorial: One of the most popular sights in the National Mall, this memorial is dedicated to the American servicemen who served during World War II. Witnessing a footfall of millions of visitors annually, the National World War II Memorial, at its centre, features a ‘Freedom Wall’ with 4,048 gold stars to signify the American lives lost in the conflict. The memorial as a whole is essentially designed to signify various aspects of American significance during the war period and should be on your list when visiting Washington.
- National Air and Space Museum: Displaying the iconic moon rock, the museum also houses some of the most iconic planes and spacecraft in history. Promising a fascinating visit, it has on display Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis, the Wright Flyer, which was the first original aeroplane and the Apollo 11 command module, which is known for taking the first humans to the moon. Managed by the Smithsonian Institution, the museum is amongst the world’s most-visited museums and features on most tourists’ bucket lists.
- The White House and Capitol Hill: Capitol Hill is home to the most popular building in all of Washington, the Capitol Building. Flaunting a spectacular rotunda, the Capitol Building showcases several paintings, statues, and historic exhibits. About 10 km away is the White House, which is the residence of the US president. It is a magnificent building and even the common public can take a tour of it.
- National Museum of Natural History: Featuring among the top ten most-visited museums in the world, the National Museum of Natural History is managed by the revered Smithsonian Institution. It is home to the award-winning Hall of Oceans in addition to the Hall of Mammals, Hall of Human Origins and the Hall of Dinosaurs. It also houses the largest blue diamond in the world — the Hope Diamond.
- The Lincoln Memorial: The Lincoln Memorial was built in honour of the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Fondly known as the Great Emancipator and Preserver of the Union, the monument houses an iconic sculpture of Abraham Lincoln within its premises. A common sight in feature films and TV shows, the memorial is known for its grandeur and scenic vistas.
Washington Airport
The State of Washington has three major airports — Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The airport is at a distance of about 40 km from the city centre and is extensively connected to all major spots in the state. Both public and private modes of transport are easily available right outside the airport to get to Washington.
