Places to visit in Malta
- Island of Gozo: This is one of Malta’s best locations for photography. There are calm towns, scenic pastoral landscapes, and picturesque beaches. The island is perfect if you are interested in some laid-back Malta sightseeing as you savour the cultural attractions that the Island has to offer. The island of Gozo has a fortified mediaeval town (Victoria), an essential archaeological site (Ggantija Temples) dating back to 3500 BC and the very busy coastal town of Marsalforn.
- St. John’s Co-Cathedral: This was built between 1573 and 1577 and it is a significant memorial as well as the holy place of worship. In 1572, it was sponsored by the Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere and was planned by the military architect Gerolamo Cassar as the convent church of the Knights belonging to the island. The cathedral exhibits two artworks by the Italian painter Caravaggio and the building is noted for being the jewel of Baroque art and architecture.
- Popeye Village: This village shot to fame when it was chosen as the film set for the 1980 musical production ‘Popeye’. Guests will be warmly welcomed by Popeye and his friends who entertain visitors with various shows during the day. There is an option to indulge in a shooting experience with an animation team. Other recreational activities on offer at Popeye Village are boat rides, a visit to the toy town of Santa, sunbathing decks, water trampolines and Popeye the Comic Museum which displays 100+ original comics from the year 1936.
- St. Agatha’s Tower: This tower is also referred to as the red tower due to its colour which was smeared and maintained at the time of restoration. The tower was constructed between 1647 and 1649 and it is the last large bastion tower to be built in Malta. The tower is situated on the Marfa Ridge Crest and presents an outstanding view of the Camino, Gozo and Ghadira Nature Reserve. The tower has a recess with a chapel devoted to St. Agatha. There now exists a wooden spiral staircase which was built as a substitute for a stone staircase leading to the flat roof.
- Parish Church of Mellieha: This is a Roman Catholic parish church that is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary. It was constructed between 1881 and 1898 and the bell towers along with the dome were completed between 1920 and 1940. The church has been built with Baroque features and it has a dome and two bell towers.
Malta Airport
Malta Airport (IATA: MLA) is the only airport serving the entire Maltese islands. It is located southwest of the Maltese capital, Valletta in the Luqa town on the Malta island.
