About Washington
Situated along the Rivers Potomac and Anacostia is the capital city of the United States of America. Resembling a diamond in shape, this spot for developing Washington was carefully chosen by the country’s first president George Washington, after whom the state is also named. One of the largest and most populous states in the world, Washington is a place of high political significance and one that has major sway on world politics and finance. With plenty of restaurants, cafes, shopping centres, and historical places, Washington can easily be any tourist’s favourite place to visit.
Places to visit in Washington
- The Lincoln Memorial : The Lincoln Memorial is dedicated to one of the most famous American presidents, Abraham Lincoln. The memorial was constructed between the years 1914 and 1922 and the theme of the building is that of Union. The 36 columns that are on the outside walls are symbolic of the 36 states that were a part of the Union when Lincoln died. Within the chamber, one can find the famous statue of Lincoln sculpted by the artist Daniel Chester French.
- National Museum of Natural History:Also referred to as the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, it opened in the year 1910 and houses over 140 million specimens of natural history. The main intent behind opening the museum was to invoke interest in education and the discovery of the natural world. Some of the most important exhibits at the National Museum of Natural History that visitors must visit are Ocean Hall, Hope Diamond, Dinosaur exhibits, Hall of Human Origins and the interactive Discovery Room.
- Jefferson Memorial: The Jefferson Memorial is located on the bank of the Tidal Basin. It is one of the oldest tourist places in Washington DC dedicated to the late Thomas Jefferson who was one of the Founding Fathers of America. It is a white domed memorial designed with inspiration from the famed Roman Pantheon. It comprises 54 ionic columns and a 9-foot dramatic statue of Jefferson standing. The walls of the memorial are engraved with excerpts from the Declaration of Independence and other important writings.
- The National Mall: Home to several memorials, museums and other important monuments, the National Mall is easily every tourist's first choice of a sightseeing spot. The mall also includes many official federal government and historic buildings including the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the National Gallery of Art, and the National World War II Memorial. The mall allows free entry for all visitors and covers a huge area that needs to be explored on foot.
- The White House and Capitol Hill :The Capitol building houses the judicial and legislative branches of the US government. Featuring a massive rotunda, the building has a massive dome and has several paintings and historic exhibits on display. Also nearby is the White House, the residence of the president of the United States of America. Open for tours for the normal public, the White House is a popular tourist attraction in Washington.
Washington Airport
The state of Washington has three major airports - Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. However, IndiGo only operates its flights from the Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
The Washington Dulles International Airport is located at a distance of about 42 km from the city centre and offers wide connectivity to all popular areas via major modes of transport.
